Pennsylvania surgery center earns outpatient knee replacement certification — 4 insights

The Pennsylvania Department of Health granted Uniontown, Pa.-based Elite Surgery Center an exception to perform outpatient knee replacement surgeries, the Herald-Standard reports.

What you should know:

1. The surgery center is the fourth in the state to receive such an exception.

2. The center underwent a two-year application to earn the exception.

3. The Pennsylvania health department considered patient safety and access, medical advances, physician consultations and CMS input in its decision.

4. Elite Surgery Center's David Sheba, MD, said, "Our patients want to have this option. People who are in pain just want to recover in their own homes."
