Laguna Hills, Calif.-based MemorialCare Saddleback Medical Center is now offering an anterior approach to hip replacement.
Here are four things to know.
1. The anterior approach is a less invasive hip replacement surgery option, allowing surgeons to reach the hip joint from the front of the hip so it can be replaced without detaching the muscle from the pelvis or femur.
2. According to Saddleback Medical Center orthopedic surgeon R. Lance Montgomery, MD, preserving the muscles leads to reduced trauma, faster rehabilitation and a lower risk of postsurgical dislocation.
3. Saddleback Medical Center acquired Mizuho OSI's Hana surgical table to improve access to the hip joint during the anterior approach by allowing the leg to be held steady at any angle, providing a view of the hip joint through smaller incisions.
4. The medical center is part of MemorialCare, which has five hospitals, 200 care locations, MemorialCare Medical Group and Greater Newport Physicians in Southern California.
