Brigham & Women’s Hospital shifts to outpatient joint replacement: 3 things to know

Outpatient joint replacement is becoming a popular option among patients, according to Vivek Shah, MD, who performs outpatient total joint surgeries at Boston-based Brigham and Women’s Hospital.

Three things to know:

1. Dr. Shah is working to send patients home the same day of surgery with less pain and fewer opioids.

2. Over the next two years, Dr. Shah hopes to perform 75 percent of joint replacements on an outpatient basis.

3. Outpatient joint replacement surgery is associated with a lower infection rates, high patient satisfaction and fewer complications, according to Brigham and Women’s Hospital.
