Adolescent ACL injuries on the rise — 4 insights

A study, published in the British Journal of Sports Medicine, discovered the rate of anterior cruciate ligament injuries in kids and teens has increased 148 percent over a decade, according to Business Insider. Here are four insights:

1. In 2005, there were 2.74 ACL injuries per 100,000 adolescents. The number increased to 6.79 ACL injuries per 100,000 in 2015.

2. Researchers noted an increase in ACL injuries in young female athletes.

3. The study's authors advise sports medicine authorities, government agencies and sports groups to make children's ACL injuries a priority.

4. Future research should identify those predisposed for ACL injuries so they can undergo preinjury training, said Olufemi Ayeni, MD, an assistant professor of orthopaedic surgery at Ontario, Canada-based McMaster University.
