7 surgery centers achieving total joint milestones

Seven surgery centers recently announced a milestone number of total joint replacements:

Physicians at Harborside Surgery Center in National Harbor, Md., performed 300-plus total joint replacements in 2018. The center, which is a partner of Towson, Md.-based SurgCenter Development, reported zero readmissions, hospital transfers or infections last year. Every patient went home the same day.

Surgeons at the West Des Moines, Iowa-based Outpatient Orthopaedic Surgery Center performed its 100th outpatient total joint procedure in early June, just under a year after the total joint program was established.

Physicians at Youngstown, Ohio-based The Orthopaedic Surgery Center performed 110 total joint procedures in 2018. Significant growth has led the practice to construct a new center that's slated to open in December 2019.

Orthopaedic Surgery Center of Ocala (Fla.), an affiliate of Nashville, Tenn.-based Envision Healthcare (AmSurg), celebrated the 100th total joint replacement performed at its center. Joseph Locker, MD, completed the milestone procedure, which was a left total hip replacement, Jan. 10.

Surgical Center of Greensboro (N.C.) surgeons performed 250 total joints in the first year of the center's total knee replacement bundle program. The program was launched in 2017.

As of January 2019, four Pewaukee-based Orthopaedic Associates of Wisconsin surgeons had performed 163 shoulder replacements using ExactechGPS since their facility implemented the navigation system in 2017.

Myrtle Beach, S.C.-based Carolina Bone & Joint Surgery Center has completed 215 cases since launching its total joint program in late 2016. The 3-OR surgery center hit that milestone on Sept. 30, with 100-plus successful total joint cases in 2019 alone.
