How Complications Impact Hospital Finances

Practice Management

An article published earlier this year in the Journal of the American Medical Association examined the impact of surgical complications on hospital finances.

The researchers studied 34,256 patients, of which 1,820 experienced at least one post surgical complication. The researchers found:

•    Complications were associated with $39,017 higher contribution margin per patient with private insurance
•    Complications were associated with $1,749 higher contribution margin per Medicare patient

The authors of the article recommend finding effective methods for reducing surgical complications and work with hospitals to implement them in a timely fashion.
