Will Orthopedic Surgeons Still Take Medicare?

In the Orthopedist Compensation Report: 2013, Medscape asked respondents whether they would consider not taking Medicare patients. Medicare traditionally reimburses lower than private payers for the same procedures.

The orthopedists responded:

•    I plan to stop taking new Medicare/Medicaid patients: 13 percent
•    I plan to stop taking current Medicare/Medicaid Patients: 6 percent
•    I will continue taking new and current Medicare/Medicaid patients: 52 percent
•    I have not yet decided: 30 percent
