More Proposed Legislation Targets Pain Clinics

Florida State Representative Patrick Rooney, (R-Palm Beach Gardens), has proposed legislation that would bar pharmacies from being within a 10-mile radius of pain clinics, according to a Palm Beach Post news report.

Rep. Rooney's bill, which would also bar physicians who own pain clinics from owning pharmacies within a 10-mile radius of the clinic, would no doubt make it more difficult for drug addicts and dealers to obtain prescription drugs; however, it would not necessarily prevent access, said executive vice president of the Florida Pharmacy Association Michael Jackson.

This proposed legislation mirrors recent activity focused on limiting or entirely eliminating pain clinics in Florida. Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi separately announced a legislative proposal that focuses on increasing penalties for physicians and pain clinic owners that violate state laws on prescribing controlled substances and running pain clinics.
