Here are five statistics on hand surgeon compensation according to MGMA's 2010 Physician Compensation and Production Survey, which is based on 2009 data.

1. Hand surgeons made an average of $544,106 in 2009.

2. Hand surgeons in single-specialty groups made an average of $511,263, which is $58,694 more than hand surgeons working in a multi-specialty group.

3. The highest compensating region of the country for hand surgeons was the South, where hand surgeons received $607,290 on average, which is $148,857 more than the lowest compensating region, the West.

4. Hand surgeons practicing in metropolitan areas of more than one million people earned the most, $560,187 annually.

5. Male hand surgeons earned an average of $490,972, compared with female hand surgeons who earned an average of $439,904.
