5 Orthopedic & Spine Surgery Centers Opened in 2012

Here are five orthopedic- or spine-driven ambulatory surgery centers that were opened or will open in 2012.

AOK Spine and Pain Surgery Center (Houston). AOK Spine and Pain center opened in August and is focused on spinal surgery and pain management procedures. Surgeons at the surgery center have a special interest in foot and ankle surgery, hand surgery, orthopedic spine surgery and pain management. The 21,000-square-foot AOK medical Center also includes imaging and an emergency room. The surgery center is accredited by the Accreditation Association of Ambulatory Health Care.

BASIC Spine (Irvine, Calif.). BASIC Spine will open an ambulatory surgery center in October 2012. The practice includes three spine surgeons and an interventional pain management physician. Additional services at the practice include chiropractic care and physical therapy. Gowriharan Thaiyananthan, MD, one of the founding partners, has pioneered techniques for stem cell therapy using embryonic stem cells and amniotic tissue through the practice's regenerative medicine program, using the proprietary inSRT injections

Lake Ridge (Va.) Ambulatory Surgery Center. This orthopedics, spine and pain management driven outpatient surgical center is scheduled to open in late 2012. The 9,500-square-foot facility is a joint venture between Blue Chip Surgical Center Partners, local physicians and Sentara Northern Virginia Medical Center. The facility will house one operating room and one procedure room. It will be located on Sentara's outpatient medical campus, which also includes 24-hour emergency care, advanced imaging and laboratory services.

Prairie SurgiCare (Peoria, Ill.). Prairie SurgiCare was founded by Richard Kube, MD and opened in April. The 5,700-square-foot surgery center was accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. Dr. Kube performs anterior cervical corpectomy, anterior cervical discectomy and fusion, anterior lumbar interbody fusion and cervical disc replacement. His practice, Prairie Spine & Pain Institute, also includes pain management and physical therapy.

Tri State Advanced Surgery Center (Marion, Ark.). Tri State Advanced Surgery Center opened in September 2012 and is co-owned by 15 specialty physicians, driven by orthopedics and neurosurgery. Jeff Cole, MD, serves as the medical director and the facility will include surgeons from Tabor Orthopedics, which is located in Nashville, Tenn. The surgery center anticipates servicing patients from Arkansas, Tennessee and Mississippi. The surgery center has two operating rooms and two procedure rooms as well as 10 suites with three semi-private rooms for adults and children.
