Researchers Successfully Treat Blindness in Mice With Stem Cell Therapy

Researchers from the University College of London successfully restored retinal cells in blind mice through a transplant therapy involving light-sensitive photoreceptor cells and embryonic stem cells, according to Nature World News.

The study involved embryo cells from mice that were cultured in a lab to grow into immature photoreceptors. Reserachers injected 200,000 cells into the mice’s retina. After approximately six weeks, the stem cells had integrated with the existing retina cells to repair nerve connections and cure blindness caused by loss of photoreceptors.
