Pocono Eye Associates founder dies at 81

Joseph Conahan, Jr., MD, co-founder of Pocono Eye Associates in East Stroudsburg, Pa., has died June 3 at the age of 81, according to a June 5 obituary posted in the Pocono Record.

Before co-founding the eye clinic in 1975, Dr. Conahan was a major in the U.S. Air Force, where he served as chief of the departments of ophthalmology at Minot Air Force Base in North Dakota.

In 1990, Dr. Conahan and his partner, Carl Weiss, MD, founded the first ophthalmology ASC in the region. 

In 1991, he was appointed to the ambulatory surgery services task force for the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania.

He was also a member of the Monroe County Medical Society, Pennsylvania Medical Society, and the American Medical Association, as well as a fellow of the American College of Surgeons, a diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, and a member of the Ophthalmic Outpatient Surgical Society and the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery.

He served on the board of directors for Pocono Medical Center Hospital, Pocono Health Systems, and the Pocono Foundation, and was a founding member at the hospital. 

He also established the department of ophthalmology at the hospital, where he served as chief for nine years.
