Eyecare services provider SuraVision has opened a new surgery center in Houston, Texas. 

Paramus, N.J.-based Valley Health System opened a glaucoma center of excellence at its Valley Medical Group ophthalmology practice in Ridgewood, N.J.

A program offering free eye care services in areas with healthcare disparities could improve the detection of eye disease detection and treatment, according to a study published Aug. 22 in JAMA Ophthalmology. 

Ophthalmology has caught the attention of private equity interest, specifically in retina care. 

In Mississippi, the state with the highest risk for patients undergoing eye surgery, ophthalmologists earn an average annual salary of $204,870.

The highest-paid ophthalmologist in Austin, Texas, earns $671,100 per year, according to Medscape's salary reporter tool, which is much higher than the mean annual wage of $312,120 ophthalmologists make according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics.
