The average annual salary for ophthalmologists has fluctuated over the past several years, reaching $301,500 in 2024.

Ophthalmologist compensation jumped a total of $31,410, or 11.63%, from 2021 to 2024.

The Bureau of Labor Statistics released updated compensation data April 2 to reflect 2024 information, the latest available. 

Here is how the average annual wage and average hourly wage have changed for ophthalmologists from 2021 to 2024, along with the state where ophthalmologists earned the most each year.

Mean annual wage: $270,090

Mean hourly wage: $129.85

Highest-paying state: Mississippi, annual mean wage of $353,090

2022

Mean annual wage: $265,450, year-over-year decrease of $4,640

Mean hourly wage: $127.62

Highest-paying state: Maine, annual mean wage of $409,920

2023

Mean annual wage: $312,120, year-over-year increase of $46,670

Mean hourly wage: $150.06

Highest-paying state: Iowa, annual mean wage of $430,910

2024

Mean annual wage: $301,500, year-over-year decrease of $10,620

Mean hourly wage: $144.95

Highest-paying state: Ohio, annual mean wage of $367,750
