NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi and NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx received a $600,000 Zeiss Opmi Lumera 700 surgical microscope for their ophthalmology department, the health system announced Aug. 12.
Bronx Borough President Vanessa L. Gibson and New York City Council Member Eric Dinowitz secured the funding for the two Bronx campuses. The microscope produces detailed, distortion-free images that will improve cataract surgeries, corneal procedures and retinal operations. It is expected to serve more than 200 cataract patients annually once operational in early 2027.
“Every Bronx resident deserves access to quality, state-of-the-art health care right here in their own community,” Ms. Gibson said.
Christopher Mastromano, CEO of NYC Health + Hospitals/Jacobi | North Central Bronx, and Alfredo Jones, COO of NYC Health + Hospitals/North Central Bronx, oversee the two facilities. Jacobi is a 457-bed teaching hospital affiliated with Albert Einstein College of Medicine, and North Central Bronx is a 215-bed community hospital.
The upgrade adds to NYC Health + Hospitals’ ongoing investment in specialty care across its Bronx campuses, which together serve thousands of borough residents each year.
