Cheyenne (Wyo.) Eye Clinic & Surgery Center has become the first facility in the state to offer laser-assisted cataract surgery, according to an April 25 article from the Wyoming Business Report.

Previously, patients in the area had to commute to Colorado to undergo this type of operation. David Smits, MD, is one of two ophthalmologists at the surgery center certified to perform the procedure. Anne Miller, MD, is the second.

While cataract surgeries have been performed since the 1970s, the new femtosecond laser technology was approved by the FDA in 2010. Laser procedures offer increased accuracy in procedures and reduce healing time for patients.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
