Aptinyx names newest member of board of directors

Biopharmaceutical company Aptinyx recently announced Joan Miller, MD, as a new addition to its board of directors.

Aptinyx specializes in developing treatments for brain and nervous system disorders, including the discovery of compounds that can enhance neural cell communication. Dr. Miller currently serves as the David Glendenning Cogan Professor of Ophthalmology and chair of the department of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School, the chief of ophthalmology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear and Massachusetts General Hospital, and ophthalmologist-in-chief at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, all based in Boston.

Dr. Miller earned a Bachelor of Science degree in life sciences from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology in Cambridge and a Doctor of Medicine degree from Harvard Medical School. She also completed an ophthalmology residency and vitreoretinal clinical fellowship at Harvard Medical School.

Dr. Miller has several accomplishments throughout her extensive career, including participating in the development of the first FDA-approved therapies for age-related macular degeneration and becoming the first female physician to be named a professor of ophthalmology at Harvard Medical School. She is also the first woman to serve as chair of the department of ophthalmology.

In addition to winning numerous awards for her work, Dr. Miller has also written more than 280 peer-reviewed articles and more than 95 book chapters, review articles or editorials. She is a member of the National Academy of Medicine, a Gold Fellow of the Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology, and she has served on multiple scientific advisory boards in the biopharmaceutical industry.
