Commentary: Adoption of Refractive Cataract Surgery, Participation in ASC Beneficial for Ophthalmic Surgeons

Richard L. Lindstrom, MD, said in order to take advantage of the aging population, ophthalmologists need to incorporate refractive cataract surgery, in an OSN Supersite editorial.

He said the same 78 million baby boomers who drove the growth in refractive corneal surgery will drive the demand for refractive cataract surgery. He said these patients are also used to sharing the cost of their care. Dr. Lindstrom also recommends young ophthalmologists join ASCs to combat the lowering reimbursement rates.

"At 600 procedures per year, a single-OR ASC works well economically, and as volume grows to more than 1,000 cases per year, an ASC becomes a very helpful revenue source for the owner-ophthalmologist," he wrote.
