Here are seven things for ASC leaders to know for Thursday, March 21, 2013.

California Observatory Surgery Center opens.

Observatory Surgery Center, currently staffed by six surgeons, has opened in Ukiah, Calif. Four more surgeons are expected to join the multispecialty center.

ICD-10 project plan should be developed.
The CMS timeline for implementation has stated that small and medium practices should have a significant portion of ICD-10 transition planning completed.

CMS increases RAC efforts, RACs face reform.

CMS is increasing its recovery audit contractors' efforts to find lost Medicare payments and having RACs look at EMR templates to penalize cloning template information. House Reps. Adam Schiff (D-Calif.) and Sam Graves (R-Mo.) have also reintroduced the Medicare Audit Improvement Act, a reform measure for Medicare RACs.

Dr. Babak Arvanaghi launches ASCpro.
Babak Arvanaghi, MD, an ASC pain management physician and founder of Basha software company, has launched ASCpro. ASCpro is a regulatory compliance document management application, which automates surgery center administrative tasks and documents.

Calko Medical Center opens and includes ASC.
The 100,000-square-foot, $60 million Calko Medical Center in New York includes an ambulatory surgery center. The center is expected to open within the next month.

Executive ASC in Michigan submits CON for $6M outpatient center.
The Executive Ambulatory Surgical Center in Dearborn, Mich., has submitted a certificate of need for a $6 million, one operating room outpatient surgery center.

Dr. Eric Grigsby performs 1st Totalis Direct Spinal Decompression.
Napa Surgery Center's Eric Grigsby, MD, performed the first minimally invasive spine surgery using the Totalis Direct Decompression system. Vertiflex received FDA clearance for the system in November 2012.
