5 ASC Industry Association Leaders to Know

Kathy Bryant. Kathy Bryant is the president of the ASC Association and leads the activities of the nation's largest ASC membership association. Ms. Bryant also serves as president of the Ambulatory Surgery Foundation. Ms. Bryant oversaw the development and implementation of the first ASC-specific credential, the Certified Administrator Surgery Center (CASC). Between 1998 and 2007, before accepting her current position with the ASC Association, Ms. Bryant led FASA, one of the two organizations that came together to form the ASC Association in 2008.

Previously she headed the government relations program of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists. Prior to her 13-year stint with ACOG, Ms. Bryant worked for the American Medical Association and the Iowa State Senate.

Alsie Sydness-Fitzgerald. Alsie Sydness-Fitzgerald is chair of the ASC Association served on the team that negotiated the merger of the two national ASC associations (FASA and American Association of Ambulatory Surgery Centers). She has worked hand-in-hand for more than 30 years with ASC professionals throughout the country, including some of most highly regarded ASC leaders and advocates from the industry’s earliest days. Previous experience includes serving in a large number of volunteer ASC leadership and advocacy roles, including serving on Certified Administrator Surgery Center Exam Committee and chairing the FASA Annual Meeting Program Committee.

Ms. Sydness-Fitzgerald retired from full-time employment as the director of clinical operations for HCA's Ambulatory Surgery Division in 2005 and presently she owns and operates her own healthcare consulting company, Alsie Fitzgerald Consulting.

Douglas Johnson. Douglas Johnson serves on the board of directors of Physician Hospitals of America as its president. He is COO of RMC Medstone Capital, which he is guiding during a period of rapid growth spurred by the company's addition of a number of new centers. Mr. Johnson is a seasoned professional and administrator with more than 30 years in the healthcare industry. Mr. Johnson has worked in many capacities in the industry and at all levels in both freestanding, as well as system institutions; he has held leadership positions in healthcare organizations both rural and urban.

Before his current role, the president and CEO of Surgical Management Professionals and, before that, the president and CEO of a major trauma center in the Midwest.  In addition, his experiences include serving at the board level in both corporate and community service organizations, and in management roles for physician corporations, managed care systems, and freestanding for profit joint ventures. 

Molly Sandvig. Molly Sandvig is the executive director of Physician Hospitals of America. She has done an outstanding job for physician-owned hospitals and her leadership on behalf of them has been instrumental in the ongoing debate about the rights for physicians to develop and hold ownership stakes in physician-owned hospitals. Ms. Sandvig also serves as the president of the South Dakota Association of Specialty Care Providers, representing specialty hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers in South Dakota.

She is currently serving a second term as a governor appointee to the South Dakota Healthcare Commission. Molly is also a co-chair of the governor-appointed subcommittee on Universal Healthcare Access in South Dakota.

Sarah Silberstein. Sarah Silberstein is executive director of the ASC Association. As executive director she manages the activities of the national ambulatory surgery center (ASC) membership association. Ms. Silberstein contributes to ASC Focus, a bimonthly journal on ASC issues, and frequently consults with state and federal policy makers on regulatory and legislative issues of interest to ASCs.

Before joining the ASC Association in 1999, Silberstein worked in the federal government relations department of the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists and the American Public Health Association.
