Higher deductible plans have led more patients to consider the cost of care before undergoing procedures, and more physicians are having that discussion today.
According to the Medscape Ophthalmologist Compensation Report 2014, 41 percent of ophthalmologists regularly discuss costs with patients, up from 39 percent last year. Another 47 percent discuss costs occasionally if the patient brings up the subject, up 5 percent from last year. Only around 4 percent never discuss treatment costs because they don't feel it's appropriate.
Ophthalmologists are among the most comfortable physicians to discuss costs; among all physicians, 32 percent regularly discuss costs with patients and 40 percent occasionally discuss costs. Eleven percent never discuss costs because they don't know the cost of treatment.
