A physician in Norma, Okla., is opening a new endocrinology clinic following Norman Regional Hospital’s closure of its Endocrine Para/Thyroid Center, The Normal Transcript reported July 4.
The hospital closed its only endocrinology clinic on July 2, laying off 10% of staff. The clinic was vital, serving patients from across Oklahoma and even Texas due to the state’s high diabetes rates (5th highest in the U.S.).
Lubna Mirza, MD, anticipating the closure, opened Norman Endocrinology Associates the next day. With help from her community, she secured a new location, equipment and staff within 30 days.
According to the report, on day one, her clinic received 900 calls in two hours.
