Annapolis, Md.-based Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center has received a $10 million gift from a local family to establish the Earl Family Surgical Center, one of the largest philanthropic donations in the hospital’s nearly 125-year history, Eye on Annapolis reported July 8.
The gift — donated by Sylvia, Matthew and Bridget Earl — serves as the lead donation for the hospital’s $20 million Advanced Surgical Suite project, which will add five new operating and procedural rooms, including a hybrid operating room built for advanced cardiovascular, neurovascular and other complex procedures. The project is designed to expand access to specialized surgical care for patients across Anne Arundel County and the Eastern Shore.
“Our family has long believed in LHAAMC’s commitment to innovation, excellence and compassionate care,” Matthew Earl said. “We are honored to support a project that will expand access to expert surgical services close to home for patients and families for generations to come.”
The Earl family’s support of the hospital dates to 1998, when Jim and Sylvia Earl made their first donation, and expanded in 2013 with the creation of the James and Sylvia Earl Simulation to Advance Innovation and Learning (SAIL) Center. Catherine Maloney, president of Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center and system chief operating officer, said the gift will strengthen the hospital’s surgical capabilities. Dr. Mitch Cahan, chair of surgery for Luminis Health, said the investment will also help the system recruit and retain surgical talent.
Luminis Health Anne Arundel Medical Center has earned 15 consecutive “A” grades for patient safety from the Leapfrog Group, one of just 16 hospitals nationwide with a perfect record since 2018.
