Hiring spree in the works at Ohio State's College of Medicine — 5 insights

In the midst of a medical campus development that will include a hospital and an ambulatory center, Columbus-based The Ohio State University College of Medicine plans to hire 500 faculty members.

Here are five insights:

1. The university will hire 350 clinicians and 150 research scientists over the next five years. It will recruit a mix of basic scientists and physician-researchers, as well as experts in diabetes, Alzheimer's disease and opioid research.

2. About 50 new research faculty have already been recruited to join the College of Medicine.

The university's recent recruits include New Vascular Surgery Division Chief Timur Sarac, MD; trauma and critical care specialist Heena Santry, MD; early-career researchers Leah Pyter, PhD, and Kristin Stanford, PhD; and mid-career scientists Lang Li, PhD, and Doug Lewandowski, PhD.

3. The new staff members will help implement interdisciplinary health-sciences training in which students will take foundational courses before joining practitioner teams in clinical settings.

4. The university is constructing new facilities to accommodate the faculty increase.

5. OSU is building an 840-bed hospital tower and an ambulatory center offering outpatient surgery, urgent care, diagnostic imaging and interventional radiology. The university is also planning an interdisciplinary research facility and an interdisciplinary health sciences center.
