The Windward Planning Commission voted 5-0 Sept. 4 to approve permits clearing the way for Hilo Benioff Medical Center to build the Keaau (Hawaii) Benioff Health Center, an outpatient clinic on Hawaii Island, according to a Sept. 8 article from Honolulu Star-Advertiser.
The commission approved a use permit for the one-story, 40,000-square-foot facility on 20 acres of agricultural-zoned land, along with a special permit for a 1.5-mile paved driveway to the site, the Star-Advertiser reported.
The project, estimated to cost up to $90 million, will provide urgent, primary, specialty and behavioral healthcare, along with imaging services, for residents of the Puna and Kau districts and Hawaii Island, according to a 2024 proposal press release from Hilo Benioff Medical Center.
The project has drawn major public and private backing. Marc and Lynne Benioff pledged $25 million toward construction, and Hawaii Gov. Josh Green committed to working with the legislature to secure a matching $25 million, according to the HBMC press release.
The health center is expected to be completed in 2028, per the press release.
