Alabama state Sen. Larry Stutts announced plans to file a bill during the next legislative session to reform certificate-of-need laws in the state, Yellowhammer News reported August 5.
Mr. Stutts previously filed legislation aimed at limiting the authority of Alabama’s CON Review Board.
“There have been bills introduced by me and by other people to totally repeal it, and then in the last two legislative sessions I’ve introduced a scaled-down version of just modifying it,” Mr. Stutts told local radio station WVNN Aug. 5. “Initially, the bill that I introduced was to repeal the CON requirements in rural counties … and then this past session, I introduced a bill … to repeal the [CON] law for psychiatric and obstetric services.”
He said Alabama’s current CON process is too expensive and burdensome for healthcare providers. He added that he has been working with various healthcare groups to shape the legislation for the upcoming session.
