Allina Health will open the Richard M. Schulze Surgical and Critical Care Center at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis on Aug. 29, 2026, completing the largest infrastructure project in the health system’s history.
The 620,000-square-foot facility includes 190 private patient rooms, advanced surgical suites and a 27,000-square-foot rooftop healing garden, according to a news release shared with Becker’s July 23. It expands critical care capacity and supports complex heart, cancer, brain and spine care at Abbott Northwestern, which has served the Minneapolis community for more than 140 years.
“This extraordinary facility reflects our commitment to providing exceptional care for generations to come,” said Lisa Shannon, president and CEO of Allina Health. Ms. Shannon credited Mortenson, Richard Schulze and the Richard M. Schulze Family Foundation for helping bring the project to life.
Mr. Schulze, founder of the family foundation, said the center will serve “patients and families throughout Minnesota and beyond.” Mortenson served as construction manager for the center, and HGA designed it in collaboration with physicians, nurses, care team members, patients and families.
Allina Health operates 12 hospital campuses and a network of clinics across Minnesota and western Wisconsin. The system is pursuing a proposed merger with Sacramento-based Sutter Health, announced in March 2026, that would create a combined 39-hospital organization.
