4 ASCs With Quick A/R Turnaround

Boulder (Colo.) Community Musculoskeletal Surgery Center. Boulder Community Musculoskeletal Surgery Center, a partnership between Boulder Community Hospital and local orthopedists, podiatrists and physiatrists opened in 2005. The Center's physicians represent general orthopedics, sports medicine, hand specialists, foot and ankle specialists, and physiatrists who specialize in the treatment of spine related pain. This facility's AR days average in the low to mid 30s. Boulder Community Musculoskeletal Surgery Center is managed by Pinnacle III.

Lakes Surgery Center (West Bloomfield, Mich.). The surgery center includes four operating rooms, two procedure rooms, pre-operative and post-operative and recovery areas. It is accredited by The Joint Commission and provides a wide array of outpatient services, including endoscopy, ENT, gastroenterology, gynecologic, ophthalmology, orthopedic and pain management. The center has 25 physician partners. According to Jennifer Butterfield, MBA, RN, CNOR, administrator of the center, the days in accounts receivable for gross revenue averages 32 days and net revenue averages 18 days year-to-date. "Our collections as a percentage of net revenue is 94.4 percent year-to-date," she said.

Tracy Tackett, CPC, said that the accounts receivable team runs an aging account receivable at the beginning of every month and work every account that is 31 days and older. "We make sure to document all notes and information we receive from the carrier regarding the status of the claim," she said "So if in 15 to 30 days it is not resolved, we contact the carrier again and with our previous information we are able get the claim processed."

Andrew Jacobs, also part of the accounts receivable team, said, "I like to stay extremely organized and prioritize on A/R that are easy fixes.  Once I get those on their way to being paid I can focus on trending issues where multiple patient claims are having issues, then I status the remaining issues." Mr. Jacobs added that he keeps this process going until he has touched all of the problem claims and while working these he also pays attention to patient statements. "I also take care of the daily posting of income to make sure that our A/R reports are as up to date as possible," said Mr. Jacobs. "I am usually not any further than three days out."

Pace (Fla.) Surgery Center. The surgery center is accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. It offers services in a number of specialties, including general surgery, gynecology, orthopedics, otolaryngology, vascular surgery and pain management. According to Karen Sepulvado, CPC, the business office manger at the surgery center, the facility's accounts receivable days have been an average of 15 days for this year. The highest it has been was 23 in January and the lowest was eigth in May. "We work very hard in keeping this number as low as possible," said Ms. Sepulvado.

Skyline Endoscopy Center (Loveland, Colo.). Skyline Endoscopy Center opened in December 2004 and specializes in GI endoscopy procedures. The center performs primarily colonoscopies, and upper endoscopies (gastroscopies). The four Skyline Endoscopy Center physicians are board-certified gastroenterologists and perform an average of 360 cases per month. The center's A/R days are consistently below 27. Skyline Endoscopy Center is managed by Pinnacle III.
