4 evolving giants in the ASC industry

Scott Becker, JD, CPA, and Ellie Rizzo -

In a time of uncertainty and turmoil in the ASC industry, these four ASC management and development company leaders have kept the outlooks for their companies strong, pursuing aggressive development strategies, aligning themselves with other innovative healthcare leaders and keeping their vision turned toward the future to capitalize on emerging ASC business trends.

Many leaders of smaller companies are also exceptionally talented; however, these leaders are profiled here because they head four of the largest companies in the ASC business and have taken or are taking their companies through transformative evolutions.

Michael Doyle, MBA,
is CEO of Surgery Partners, responsible for both developing new partnerships and overseeing day-to-day operations for the company. He has been with Surgery Partners since the company was founded in 2004.

Prior to joining Surgery Partners, Mr. Doyle was senior vice president of operations at a large corporate healthcare organization, at which he spent nearly a decade.

Mr. Doyle was at the helm of Surgery Partners during its recent $792 million acquisition of ASC operator Symbion. "Mr. Doyle has diversified the business of Surgery Partners while doubling down on the core business by acquiring Symbion," says Scott Becker, JD, CPA, publisher of Becker's Healthcare.

Mr. Doyle holds a bachelor's degree in physiotherapy from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia, and an MBA from Troy State University.

Andrew Hayek is president and CEO of Surgical Care Affiliates. Prior to his role at SCA, Mr. Hayek was president of a DaVita Healthcare Partners division and president and COO of Alliance Healthcare Services. He also has held positions at global investment company Kohlberg Kravis Roberts & Co. and global management consulting firm Boston Consulting Group.

Mr. Hayek also serves on SCA's board and the board of healthcare analytics company Sg2, and he is a Henry Crown Fellow at the Aspen Institute — an educational and policy studies organization dedicated to fostering value-based leadership in a nonpartisan environment.

"Mr. Hayek is a brilliant leader who has both focused on the core business while expanding clarity into who the company views as its key customer. He has also focused relentlessly on recruiting and retaining top elite talent," says Mr. Becker of Mr. Hayek, who is responsible for leading SCA through a $100 million IPO and the acquisition of ASC operator Health Inventures, both in 2013.

Mr. Hayek earned his undergraduate degree from Yale University.

Christopher A. Holden is president, CEO and director of AmSurg. He joined the company in those positions in late 2007 with a decade-and-a-half of experience in the healthcare industry.

Prior to his role at AmSurg, Mr. Holden founding team member and officer of Triad Hospital. After the hospital's founding in 1999, Mr. Holden served as senior vice president and division president of Triad Hospital Inc. He has also served in various officer positions with Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation.

"Mr. Holden, like Mr. Hayek and Mr. Doyle, has focused on the core business while also brilliantly diversifying the company," says Mr. Becker. Mr. Holden led AmSurg through its recently finalized $2.35B acquisition of Sheridan Healthcare, a physician and healthcare outsourcing company.

William Wilcox, MHA is CEO of United Surgical Partners International, where he has been since September 1998. He is also a member of USPI's board or directors.

Before he joined USPI, Mr. Wilcox had served in various healthcare industry executive roles, including president of Surgery Group of Columbia/HCA Healthcare Corporation, president and CEO of Ambulatory Surgery Division of Columbia and president and CEO of United Dental Care.

Mr. Wilcox was at USPI's helm through its period of multiple acquisitions, including Titan Health Corporation and Health Mark in the early 2010s. "Mr. Wilcox is a leader amongst leaders. He, with his leadership team, has led the company to be in front with hospital partnership and has also doubled down on the core ASC business," says Mr. Becker of Mr. Wilcox's business leadership.

Mr. Wilcox holds an undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University and an MHA from Tulane University.
