Here are 18 gastroenterologists that serve as president of state and city gastroenterology and endoscopy societies.

Maria Abreau, MD, is president of the Florida Gastroenterologic Society. Dr. Abreau is chief of the division of gastroenterology at University of Miami Health System. She also serves as a professor of medicine and microbiology and immunology in the health system and Miller School of Medicine. She is also a member of the American Society of Clinical Investigators. Dr. Abreau has research interests in host-bacterial infections and inflammatory bowel disease.  

Rudolph Beford, MD, is the president of the Southern California Society of Gastroenterology and practices at Southern California Medical Gastroenterology Group. Dr. Bedford is also the director of the Pancreatico-Biliary Services Department at UCLA. Dr. Bedford focuses on interventional endoscopy and pancreatic biliary disease. He also serves as a gastroenterology consultant for the Los Angeles Zoo.

Brian P. Bosworth, MD, is president of the New York Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Dr. Bosworth practices at the Weill Cornell Jill Roberts Center for Inflammatory Bowel Disease in New York. He is also an associate professor of medicine at Weill Cornell Medical College and director of the gastroenterology fellowship program. Dr. Bosworth is a member of the American College of Gastroenterology mentoring program.

Michael Guirl, MD, FACG, FACP, is president of the Texas Society for Gastroenterology and Endoscopy. He practices at Gastroenterology Consultants of San Antonio. He focuses on therapeutic and capsule endoscopy, colonoscopy, inflammatory bowel disease and hepatology. He completed his fellowship training at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.

Naresh Gunaratnam, MD, is president of the Michigan Gastroenterology Society. He practices at Huron Gastroenterology Center for Digestive Care in Ypsilanti. Dr. Gunaratnam focuses on therapeutic endoscopy and endoscopic ultrasound. He completed his fellowship training at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He completed an additional fellowship in advanced endoscopy at Mayo Clinic in Rochester.

Preston Kim, MD, is president of the Maryland Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Dr. Kim is the section chief of gastroenterology at Howard County General Hospital and practices at Digestive Disease Associates, both in Columbia, Md. Dr. Kim focuses on GERD, gastric ulcers, GI cancers and GI diseases.

Joseph Kittinger III, MD, FACP, FACG, AGAF, is president of the North Carolina Society of Gastroenterology. He is a clinical associate professor of medicine at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Dr. Kittinger practices with Wilmington Gastroenterology Associates. He focuses on gastroenterology, hepatology and nutrition.

Frederick J. Kogan, PhD, MD, is the president of the Phoenix Society of Gastroenterology. He practices with Banner Health in Peoria, Ariz. Dr. Kogan focuses on disorders of the digestive system. He completed both his internship and residency at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center in Tucson.

David Loren, MD, is president of the Delaware Valley Society for Gastrointestinal Endoscopy. Dr. Loren is associate director of medical endoscopy and co-director of the pancreaticobiliary section at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals in Philadelphia. He focuses on endoscopy, esophageal cancer and disease, GI bleeding, GI cancers and pancreatic, bile duct and gallbladder conditions.

Howard Mertz, MD, is president of the Tennessee Society of Gastroenterology and Endoscopy. Dr. Mertz serves as an assistant professor at Vanderbilt University and practices with Nashville Gastrointestinal Specialists. He completed his fellowship training at UCLA. Dr. Mertz provides care across the spectrum of gastroenterology, with a focus on inflammatory bowel disease and endoscopic ultrasound.

Salvatore A. Moscatello, DO, FACG, is president of the South Carolina Gastroenterology Association. He practices at South Coast Gastroenterology. He earned his medical degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Moscatello completed his internship and residency at Hackensack (N.J.) Medical Center.

Vonda Reeves-Darby, MD, FACP, FACG, is president of the Mississippi Gastroenterology Society. She practices at GI Associates & Endoscopy Center in Jackson and Madison, Miss. Dr. Reeves-Darby completed her fellowship training at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston. She also serves as a clinical assistant professor of medicine at the University of Mississippi Medical Center School of Medicine.

Alan V. Safdi, MD, is president and chair of the legislative committee of the Ohio Gastroenterology Society. Dr. Safdi practices at the Ohio Gastroenterology & Liver Institute in Cincinnati. He has also served as the president, treasurer and secretary of the Southwest Ohio Digestive Disease Society. Dr. Safdi has research interests in IBD, IBS, GERD, colon cancer, peptic ulcers, hypertension and diabetes. He has served as the principle investigator in a number of clinical studies.

David A. Sass, MD, is president of the Pennsylvania Society of Gastroenterology. Dr. Sass is the medical director of the liver transplant program at Thomas Jefferson University Hospitals in Philadelphia. He also serves as an associate professor. He is board-certified in transplant hepatology, as well as internal medicine and gastroenterology. He completed his fellowship training at Albert Einstein Medical Center in Philadelphia and University of Pittsburgh Medical Center.  

Michael Steinbook, MD, is president of the Georgia Gastroenterologic and Endoscopic Society. He practices in Columbus, Ga. Dr. Steinbook earned his medical degree at the Medical College of Georgia School of Medicine in Augusta. He completed his internship and residency at Dwight David Eisenhower Army Medical Center in Gordon, Ga. Dr. Steinbook completed his fellowship training at William Beaumont Army Medical Center in El Paso, Texas.    

Sally Stipho, MD, is president of the San Diego Gastroenterology Society. She practices with San Diego Gastroenterology Medical Associates. She also serves as a member of the teaching staff at Scripps Mercy Hospital in San Diego. Dr. Stipho completed her fellowship training at the Carl T. Hayden VA Medical Center and Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix.

Ralph M. Wisniewski II, MD, FACP, is president of the Virginia Gastroenterological Society. He practices at Gastroenterology Associates of Central Virginia in Lynchburg. His fellowship, completed at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville, included endoscopic ultrasound and ERCP training.
