15 ASCs Adding New Procedures

Here are 15 ambulatory surgery centers that have recently added or will soon add new procedures.

Brooks Eye Associates (Dallas). This ophthalmology center added the Trulign Toric intraocular lens to its offering in October 2013. The procedure is manufactured by Bausch and Lomb and is designed to accommodate patients with astigmatic correction. The center's founder Dain B. Brooks, MD, is a board-certified ophthalmologist and along with his team, Dr. Brooks offers LASIK, PRK, glaucoma treatments, blepharitis treatments and general eye services.

Cool Springs Surgery Center (Franklin, Tenn.). The surgery center recently added laser cataract surgery. Founded in 2000, the center is affiliated with Symbion and accredited by The Joint Commission. It includes five operating rooms and one gastroenterology procedure room. Surgeons have treated 39,000 patients there since its opening. The center offers a wide array of services, including ENT, neurosurgery, gynecology, pain management, podiatry and urology.

Hays Surgery Center (Kyle, Texas). Hays Surgery Center is affiliated with Arise Healthcare. In September 2013, the surgery center began to offer adult stem cell grafting for cartilage defects in orthopedics. The procedure came to the surgery center as a result of collaboration between Arise Healthcare and Celling Biosciences.

Microsurgical Spine Center (Puyallup, Wash.). The surgery center recently added two-level cervical artificial disc replacement procedures as well as stem cell procedures. In October 2013, Richard Rooney, MD, and Kathy Wang, DO, of NeoSpine in Puyallup, performed the state's first stem cell procedure to treat patients with back pain from degenerative disc disease at Microsurgical Spine Center. The surgery center is a part of NeoSpine. It is affiliated with Symbion and it is staffed by a team of five physicians.

Minimally Invasive Spine Institute (Lafayette, Colo.). The Symbion-affiliated surgery center added ophthalmology services, such as cataract procedures, in December 2013. Physicians from Boulder Neurosurgical Associates, Alpine Spine Center and Colorado Center for Spine Medicine, all located in Boulder, Colo., perform procedures at the surgery center. The center offers minimally invasive spine procedures, neurosurgery, non-surgical procedures and plastic and general surgery.

New Tampa Surgery Center (Wesley Chapel, Fla.). The surgery center, which is affiliated with Surgery Partners, added the AccuraScope back pain procedure in January 2014. The AccuraScope is a minimally invasive procedure that diagnoses and treats intervertebral lumbar discs, spinal stenosis and other chronic back pain causes. The center includes two operating rooms and two procedure rooms. It provides surgical care in numerous specialties, such as pain management, pediatrics, gastroenterology, orthopedics, ophthalmology and ENT. It is certified by Medicare and accredited by the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care.

Oregon Outpatient Surgery Center (Tigard, Ore.). The surgery center is adding total joint procedures in April 2014, and plans to offer total hip and total knee procedures. The center put together the program with the help of Marshall Steele, a consulting company and Providence Health and Services, its hospital partner.

"Total joints are a great fit for our center, which is about 80 percent orthopedics and sports medicine," says Jesseye Arrambide, RN, BSN, CNOR, executive director of the center. "There were a lot of new areas to explore in terms of equipment, supplies and available resources. It has been a very exciting endeavor for our already busy center."

The surgery center was established in 2004 and is accredited by Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care. It is staffed by seven physicians.

Orthopaedic Surgery Center of Asheville (N.C.). In February, the Orthopedic Surgery Center of Asheville added partial knee and unicompartmental knee surgery. The 9,000-square-foot center, affiliated with Symbion, has three operating rooms.

Premier Surgery Center (Brunswick, Ga.). Premier Surgery Center is a multispecialty ASC affiliated with Symbion. In October 2013, the center acquired a femtosecond laser and began offering laser cataract surgery. The center is the only provider in the southeast Georgia area to have a femtosecond laser. The center also offers general surgery, gynecology, orthopedic, pain management, plastics, podiatry, urology and neurology services.

Salem (Ore.) Endoscopy Center. Salem Endoscopy Center recently began performing fecal microbiota transplantations for patients with recurrent C. difficile infections. "Coordination of patient, donor and insurance is multidisciplinary and is often a fine dance," says administrator Zoe Wendolowski, RN. "But it is worth it when the patients recover completely."

Slocum Surgery Center (Eugene, Ore.). The surgery center is adding unicompartmental knee procedures and is also preparing to add total hip arthroplasty. The center is accredited by American Association for Ambulatory Health Care and includes 20 orthopedists. It offers treatments for a wide array of musculoskeletal problems, such as sports injuries, complex fractures, joint reconstruction and arthritis. Its administrator is Shelley Yuva.

St. Augustine (Fla.) Surgery Center. The surgery center added total joint procedures in January. It is the first ASC in the state to introduce a total joint program supported by robotic technology. The center used Apex Robotic Technology, developed by OMNIlife Science, to support the program.

"This program has proven that quality care for more complex cases can be safely and efficiently delivered in the outpatient surgery setting," said Stephanie Martin, BSN, RN, CNOR, CASC, administrator of the surgery center, in a Becker's ASC Review article. 

The center offers surgical services in a number of specialties, including ENT, gastroenterology, ophthalmology, podiatry, orthopedics, pain management and gynecology.

Stonegate Surgery Center (Austin, Texas). In September 2013, the surgery center began to perform adult stem cell grafting for cartilage defects in orthopedics. Stonegate Surgery Center is affiliated with Arise Healthcare. The procedure was introduced at the surgery center as a result of Arise Healthcare's partnership with Celling Biosciences.
 
The Surgery Center (Columbus, Ga.). Between September and December 2013, The Surgery Center added three new procedures: anterior cervical disc fusion and direct later interbody fusion and kyphoplasty. The surgery center is affiliated with Symbion. The Surgery Center is the only ASC in the area that offers neurological services.

Wilmington (N.C.) SurgCare. Wilmington SurgCare acquired a femtosecond laser in September 2013 and began performing laser cataract surgery. It was the first provider in the multi-county area to acquire a femtosecond laser. In March, the center added neurosurgery and total knee replacement services. Wilmington SurgCare is affiliated with Symbion.
