ASCS are emerging as powerful assets in hospitals’ and health systems’ efforts to attract and retain surgeons, particularly in high-demand specialties.
According to Avanza’s Intelligence Hospital Leadership ASC Survey, 93% of hospital and health system leaders view having an ASC as important for surgeon recruitment.
Here are five key insights from the report:
1. “Surgeons, especially those in high-demand specialties like orthopedics and ophthalmology, prefer ASCs for their efficiency and enhanced autonomy compared to hospital-based surgery,” the report notes. “ASCs can also offer a competitive edge in recruitment by providing surgeons with investment opportunities and financial incentives.”
2. Sixty-five percent of hospitals and health systems said they are investing in ASCs to strengthen physician relationships. Additionally, 24% of respondents said they were investing to prevent surgeons from moving cases outside the hospital system.
3. More than half of hospitals and health systems surveyed allow physicians to invest in their ASCs.
4. Approximately 75% of hospitals and health systems structure their ASCs as joint ventures. This trend has remained consistent year over year, reflecting a sustained preference for shared ownership with physician partners.
5. Sixty-seven percent of organizations now prefer owning at least 50% of their ASC partnerships, up from 64% in 2023.
