Why ASCs are exciting cardiologists

The continued migration of cardiology care towards ASCs as well as new cardiovascular procedures being approved for ASC settings have cardiologists optimistic about the future.

These two cardiologists recently connected with Becker’s to talk about what parts of the industry they are most excited about moving forward.

Note: Responses were lightly edited for clarity and length

Question: What aspects about cardiology are you optimistic about going forward?

Sarang Mangalmurti, MD. Interventional Cardiologist and Endovascular Specialist of  BMMSA Heart and Vascular Center of the Main Line (Bryn Mawr, Pa.): The potential addition of new approved cardiovascular procedures in the ASC setting including EP ablation, cardiac IVL, renal denervation and more.

Rajesh Sharma, MD. Interventional Cardiologist of Advanced Heart And Vein Center (Thornton, Colo.): I am most excited about the outpatient ambulatory surgery center setting. We are doing approximately 60 to 70% of all our elective cardiovascular work in our ASC setting. This will expand as we hope to get EP ablation procedures approved next year. We provide excellent quality care at a substantially reduced cost. Insurance carriers are all calling us to provide their elective cardiovascular services. We feel we are well positioned to accommodate this much needed service. Having done over 4,500 cases in almost five years, the patient experience has been excellent. Our quality data has been reported and we are quite proud of our achievement.

At the Becker’s 32nd Annual Meeting: The Business and Operations of ASCs, taking place October 29-31 in Chicago, ASC leaders, surgeons and healthcare executives will explore strategies to drive growth, enhance operational performance, navigate reimbursement challenges and prepare for the future of ambulatory surgery.
