The ideal number of active physician owners varies between single-specialty ASCs and multispecialty ones, according to HealthCare Appraisers' "2019 ASC Valuation Survey."

HealthCare Appraisers surveyed 26 ASC management companies representing more than 1,000 surgery centers in the U.S.

Number of active physician owners preferred for single-specialty centers:

1. One to five: 13 percent
2. Six to 10: 50 percent
3. Eleven to 15: 27 percent
4. Sixteen to 20: 7 percent
5. Twenty-one to 25: 3 percent

Number of active physician owners preferred for multispecialty centers:

6. Six to 10: 11 percent
7. Eleven to 15: 25 percent
8. Sixteen to 20: 39 percent
9. Twenty-one to 25: 18 percent
10. Twenty-six to 30: 0 percent
11. More than 30: 7 percent
