Tennessee hospital posts 24% decrease in ASC caseload — Why?

Johnson City, Tenn.-based Ballard Health increased its third-quarter revenues for the year, but experienced a 24 percent decrease in its ASC caseload, the Bristol Herald Courier reports.

What you should know:

1. The system saw improvements in operating cash flow, total cash flow and revenue for the quarter.

2. However, its total surgical caseload decreased by 1.1 percent to 18,106, and its ASC caseload decreased by 24 percent.

3. The system said the ASC-related decreases can be attributed to the restructuring of two of its joint venture surgery centers. Because of the restructuring, Ballard said it would "no longer [consolidate] the volumes for reporting purposes."

4. Ballard said Tennessee residents have embraced lower-cost settings. The hospital decreased its number of emergency room visits by 5,000 in the quarter and increased the number of urgent care visits by 4,000.
