Sutter Maternity & Surgery Center awards $10K scholarship — 3 notes

Sutter Maternity & Surgery Center of Santa Cruz (Calif.) awarded University of California, Santa Cruz graduate Sarah Hermann a $10,000 scholarship.

Here's what you should know:

1. A San Diego native and human biology major, Ms. Hermann received the 12th annual Primary Care Physician award. She participated in research at a UCSC's epigenetics lab and an international research program in Switzerland.

2. SMSC and the UC Santa Cruz Foundation administer the scholarship.

3. Scholarship recipients can put the $10,000 toward their education at an accredited medical school, on the condition they return to the Central Coast to practice after school.

"Sarah's passion for ensuring healthcare for all will make her a strong advocate for her patients," said SMSC Chief Administrative Officer Trina White. "In addition, her outstanding academic background, which combines both traditional biology and research in the rapidly developing field of epigenetics, is well suited for a future where medical care will encompass new understandings of how genes and the environment interact to influence health."
