Locum tenens staffing in the healthcare industry: 4 things to know

The notion of temporary staffing, or locum tenens, started taking hold in the 1970s. Forty years later, it has become a quintessential practice in the changing healthcare environment, HealthLeaders Media reports.

Here's what you should know.

1. Locum tenens staffing employs providers to fill short-term gaps in staffing on a weekly basis. In modern healthcare, staffing assignments may last several months.

2. Dallas-based Staff Care, a locum tenens staffing firm, released its annual survey claiming the staffing practice is in its highest demand now. Ninety-four percent of healthcare facility managers used locum tenens staffing in the last 12 months.

3. Some providers serve as locum tenens physicians to pick up extra shifts.

4. Modern locum tenens physicians are more specialty-based than their general provider predecessors.
