Envision appoints 1st physician to hold president of physician services title — 3 insights

Nashville, Tenn.-based Envision Healthcare appointed Douglas Smith, MD, president of Envision Physician Services, the first time a physician has held the title.

What you should know:

1. Dr. Smith's appointment is indicative of how the company views clinicians "at this pivotal time of transformation for our country's healthcare system and for our company," said Envision CEO and President Christopher Holden.

2. Dr. Smith joined Envision in 2015 as a member of Scottsdale (Ariz.) Emergency Associates. He led Envision's emergency medicine, hospitalist and critical care services lines since 2017.

3. Dr. Smith earned his medical degree from Tucson-based University of Arizona and also completed his emergency medical training there. He is a fellow of the American College of Emergency Physicians.

On the appointment, Dr. Smith said: "The practice of medicine and the patient-physician relationship have grown remarkably complex, and Envision is perfectly positioned to evolve with the complexity to better serve our physicians, our health system customers and patients. We know that demands the right balance of physician leadership and a first-class support system, and I am both honored and excited to deliver against the opportunity that is ahead for us."
