Here’s what you should know:
1. Dr. Miller is the David Glendenning Cogan professor at Boston-based Harvard Medical School as well as the chair of ophthalmology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear and Massachusetts General Hospital, both based in Boston.
2. She is an internationally recognized retinal disorder expert. Some of her and her colleagues’ notable accomplishments include developing photodynamic therapy using verteporfin and identifying the role vascular endothelial growth factor plays in ocular neovascularization.
3. Dr. Miller is the fifth women to receive the Howe Medal over its 100-year history.
4. She said, “The Howe Medal is a tremendous honor and I am humbled to be counted among such ophthalmology luminaries. While we’ve made great progress in recent decades to advance treatments for blinding retinal diseases, my colleagues and I continue to work towards a day when every child born will enjoy a lifetime of vision.”
