Here are five things to know:
1. The two honorees, Joseph Spadafora, DO, and Eric Schaible, MD, both practice at the Community Eye Center, which recently became a new donor to the Charlotte Community Foundation. The foundation hopes to increase grant funds available for nonprofit agencies in Charlotte County.
2. Dr. Spadafora has performed research in ocular anti-inflammatory agents and conducts laser cataract extraction at St. Lucy’s outpatient center. He earned his doctorate of osteopathic medicine at the University of Health Science College of Osteopathic Medicine and Surgery in Kansas City, Mo., and completed his fellowship training in anterior segment surgery in Long Beach, Calif.
3. Dr. Schaible performs advanced cataract surgery and conducts research into neurosurgery, corneal surgery and neuro-ophthalmology. He earned his medical degree from Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia and completed his residency at The Storm Eye Institute in Charleston, S.C.
4. St. Lucy’s Eye Surgery Center opened more than 37 years ago and offers lens implants, glaucoma laser, corneal replacement surgery, eyelid surgery and other specialty procedures. The AAAHC-accredited center has an ORA System for IOL procedures.
5. This award was part of the first annual Charlotte Cares Campaign.
