The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education recognized 25 individuals and two institutions at its annual education conference, and named the first John C. Gienapp Distinguished Service Award recipient in six years. Here are five notes.
1. Timothy Flynn, MD, of the Gainesville-based University of Florida College of Medicine received the John C. Gienapp Distinguished Service Award. Dr. Flynn is a senior associate dean for clinical affairs and a professor in the department of surgery's division of vascular and endovascular surgery.
2. ACGME named nine recipients of the Parker J. Palmer Courage to Teach Award, including Vishad Nabili, MD, an otolaryngology residency program director at the Los Angeles-based UCLA David Geffen School of Medicine.
3. Christopher Nagy, MD, a program director at the Fort Sam Houston, Texas-based San Antonio Uniformed Services Health Education Consortium, also received the Courage to Teach Award.
4. Melissa Beckman, a surgery program coordinator at the University at Buffalo (N.Y.) School of Medicine was one of six individuals to receive the GME Program Coordinator Excellence Award. The award recognizes deep understanding of the accreditation process, excellent communication and interpersonal skills, and projects to improve residency programs.
5. ACGME honored Excela Health Latrobe (Pa.) Hospital and Memorial Hospital of South Bend (Ind.) with the DeWitt C. Baldwin Jr. Award for their exemplary accredited residency/fellowship programs.
