3 core principles of ASC management

A full ASC schedule is an indication of operational success, according to health system executive and consultant Andy Hillig.

"An efficiently run ASC means that the physicians like coming and doing their cases at the ASC — the schedule is full each day, but a surgeon can easily get a case scheduled, cases start on time, supplies are available and there are no delays in completing cases," he said. "Therefore, an ASC leader needs to have a vision for this and measure the ASC's performance each day."

With more than 10 years of experience, Mr. Hillig specializes in developing leadership and improving operational efficiency in surgical settings. Mr. Hillig, who runs Andy Hillig Solutions, shared three core principles of business management with Becker's ASC Review:

1. Know your business. Have a clear vision of what success looks like. Determine the critical and fundamental indicators of success in your business.

2. Run your business. Measure how well it's running and gauge whether it's achieving success.

3. Improve your business. Deeply understand the root causes of why aspects are not running well and utilize a standard method for improvement.
