Transformation leadership may impact quality of care — 3 takeaways

A study shows transformation leadership may have positive effects on the quality of patient care, according to News-Medical.

Researchers analyzed a sample of 541 registered nurses in Quebec with less than five years of nursing experience. Nurses completed an anonymous online survey and self-reported on the effect of different management styles.

Journal of Advanced Nursing published the study.

Here are three takeaways:

1. Transformational leadership entails motivating nurses to work toward a collective goal within a support milieu.

2. The survey revealed abusive leadership had the potential to negatively impact patient care and lead nurses to quit.

3. "Paying close attention to the leadership practices of nurse managers could go a long way in improving patient care and increasing the retention rate among our new nurses," said Mélanie Lavoie-Tremblay, PhD, the study's lead author. "Managers should use the results to provide training for nurse managers focusing on transformational leadership practices and the dangers of abusive leadership."
