The man with the plan — How Dr. Atul Gawande wants to make healthcare easier

Amazon, Berkshire Hathaway and JPMorgan Chase recently named Atul Gawande, MD, the CEO of their healthcare partnership.

Dr. Gawande was at the Aspen Ideas Festival, June 21 to June 30 in Aspen, Colo., speaking on healthcare, NPR reports. Here's what he had to say:

1. In his new role, he ajms to help make it simpler for physicians to do the right thing.

2. Physicians providing "the wrong care in the wrong way at the wrong time," is the biggest source of waste in the U.S. healthcare system.

3. There are plentiful opportunities to improve healthcare. "All we have to do in this new venture is pick a few of them and try to bat them out of the park," Dr. Gawande said.

4. He couldn't elaborate on the details of his new job, but he joked his first task was to name the new company.

5. Dr. Gawande did say this about the new venture: "The largest concept here is I get to have a million patients that I, as a doctor, get to add to my responsibility. And my job to them is to figure out ways that we are going to drive better outcomes, better satisfaction with care and better cost efficiency with new models that can be incubated for all."
