Dr. Rothman died of cancer at Philadelphia-based Jefferson Hospital for Neuroscience in Center City .
Dr. Rothman had a notable career in the field of orthopedics. The Rothman Institute rose to prominence for its orthopedic work, and several institute physicians served as team physicians for the Philadelphia Phillies, Philadelphia Eagles, Philadelphia Flyers and Philadelphia 76ers.
Dr. Rothman was one of the first surgeons in Philadelphia to embrace hip replacement surgery. A rich philanthropist was referred to Dr. Rothman for a hip replacement when it was still a relatively new surgery. The philanthropist was so enthralled with the results he donated several millions of dollars to Philadelphia-based Pennsylvania Hospital, which spawned the Rothman Institute.
Dr. Rothman performed his last surgery May 16, ending his 50-year medical career. He performed more than 50,000 knee and hip replacements throughout his career.
