Winston-Salem, N.C.-based Piedmont Outpatient Surgery Center Administrator Brandi Cunningham, RN, BSN shared the details behind POSC's incentive program and how it's boosted staff performance.

Question: What's something you've implemented at your center that has seen great results that other ASCs could benefit from?

Brandi Cunningham: I think one thing I implemented here that has had a lasting impact was an incentive program.

Our incentive program is based on several things: performance evaluation, morale score, patient satisfaction scores, turnover time, inventory, hours worked and claim denials, among others. The incentive payout is all based on net revenue; the better the facility does, the more money the staff gets.

The staff are evaluated by their peers and one manager in order to get their performance evaluation score and their morale score. The hours worked are actually hours they are clocked in to work (PTO and sick time do not count in this number). All other categories are the same for every employee to promote teamwork.

The incentive program keeps people accountable, it makes them very conscientious of supplies, how to save money and it makes everyone strive to do their very best.
