Lumeris survey reveals value-based program challenges for health systems — 7 key findings

A Lumeris-sponsored survey shows 73 percent of C-suite executives consider the transition to value-based care a high priority for their health systems.

The Health Management Academy surveyed 22 C-suite executives, representing 57 health systems. Here are seven key findings.

1. Participants revealed four value-based program challenges: aligning physician incentives; maintaining uniformity of care across the health system; addressing payer functions; and satisfying data analysis needs.

2. Regardless of their progress in value-based model implementation, most health systems struggle with engaging physician leadership and aligning incentives to focus on the health of the overall patient population.

3. Barriers to changing physician behavior include insufficient population health data and pervasive fee-for-service payment models.

4. Aligned incentives, effective governance and thorough value-based care training are key components of effective engagement models, as well as tools for decision-making improvement and clinical programs optimizing care delivery.

5. Providers reported insufficient actionable data and procedures for care quality tracking.

6. Health systems building value-based programs through outside partnerships select vendors based on trust, common values and cultural fit.

7. Operating partners can help health systems develop, scale and optimize value-based care models, according to Lumeris Chairman and CEO Mike Long.

"At the core of this transformation is supporting physicians with the right leadership, incentives, skills, information and resources to become proficient with value-based care," he said.
