Columbia University medical student receives scholarship created by ophthalmologists — 3 insights

New York City-based Columbia University Vagelos College of Physicians and Surgeons' student Emery Jamerson received the 2018 Dr. David K. McDonogh Scholarship in Ophthalmology/ENT.

What you should know:

1. The award honors Dr. McDonogh who was denied a medical degree because of his race. The scholarship was established by a group of New York ophthalmologist and ENT physicians. The physicians created the fund to increase the number of underrepresented races in ophthalmology and ENT.

2. Mr. Jamerson received the scholarship at an event organized by National Medical Fellowships.

3. Mr. Jameson will graduate this year and begin an ophthalmology residency soon thereafter.
