Chevy Chase Surgery Center staff care for patients in Azerbaijan — 4 insights

Glendale, Calif.-based Chevy Chase Surgery Center physicians traveled to the Stepanakert Republican Medical Center in Stepanaker, Negorno Karapagh, for a medical mission trip, Asbarez reports.

Here's what you should know:

1. The physicians organized the trip with help from Armenia Fund USA and Glendale-based Adventist Health.

2. The nine Chevy Chase Surgery Center physicians received medical equipment and supply donations from Avedis Tavitian, MD, and Ara Tavitian, MD.

3. The surgical team performed gastroenterology, ophthalmology and general surgery procedures. The physicians completed 35 eye surgeries, 56 endoscopies, 56 colonoscopies and 19 general surgeries during the mission, which took place Sept. 27 to Oct. 5..

4. Chevy Chase Surgery Center Administrator Raffi Sarkissian said, "Supporting institutions such as the Stepanakert Republican Medical Center will ultimately enable them to provide better healthcare to the people of Artsakh. We have already started planning our next year's mission by adding two or three specialties to its work scope. I also want to thank Armenia Fund and Adventist Health for their continued support of the project."
