8 steps ASC leaders should take when employees are resistant to change

With more than 10 years of experience, healthcare consultant Andy Hillig specializes in developing leadership and improving operational efficiency in surgical settings.

Mr. Hillig, who runs Andy Hillig Solutions, shared eight steps ASC leaders can take to get staff onboard with strategy changes withBecker's ASC Review:

1. Create a sense of urgency. Outline why the change is needed, using empirical evidence that speaks to current performance and compels everyone to change.

2. Articulate a clear vision of the future. Paint a picture of what the "promised land" looks like.

3. Help everyone see how their work impacts the future. When personnel understand why and have a good sense of how their work impacts the new strategy and the role they play, they are more likely to embrace the change.

4. Set the course.

5. Move ahead.

6. Don't retreat into the office. Leaders must be present, supporting the change.

7. Measure the impact. Ensure the change is having the intended effect, and have the integrity to abandon plans if the change isn't working.

8. Celebrate success.
